Pik As is the largest homeless shelter in Hamburg and the oldest in Germany.
It can accommodate 210 people, but in winter, the demand exceeds the capacity considerably and the 65 sparsely furnished rooms become extremely crowded. With low staffing levels and little resources, employees and volunteers try to provide these diverse group of men a decent place to spend the night, have a shower and do their laundry. Pik As is open around the clock. Some stay for a few days - others for several years.
